Welcome to ANPPCAN Kenya Chapter PDF Print E-mail

ANPPCAN Kenya Chapter is the Kenyan National chapter of the African Network for the Prevention and Protection against Child Abuse and Neglect, a pan-African child rights organization with chapters in seventeen African countries.

ANPPCAN Kenya was established in 1989 by a group of volunteers concerned with the plight of children. It became fully operational in 1995 when a formal secretariat was opened in Nairobi .
It is a charitable, not for profit organization and was registered as a Non-Governmental Organization in 1995. Like the other ANPPCAN chapters, ANPPCAN Kenya operates as a national resource centre on child abuse and neglect and children's rights. We provide information and technical expertise on child protection and child rights issues, carry out research on emerging children's issues and lobby governments, donors, other NGOs and communities on behalf of children.

Currently, ANPPCAN Kenya has four main programmatic areas which include a child help desk, legal services unit, information and documentation, and Community based programmes dealing with various projects and activities.

To achieve her objectives, ANPPCAN Kenya creates awareness and stirs sensitivity with the aim of enlightening each individual to recognize and accept his or her responsibility to stand up for children’s rights. ANPPCAN Kenya also provides legal advice and where necessary litigation to children who are victims of abuse and neglect, or those acting on their behalf.  The organization uses as its basis the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACRWC 1990) and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC 1989), both of which the Government of Kenya has ratified. On the domestic front, the Children Act (2001) Cap 586 of the Laws of Kenya which domesticates the above international instruments is the principle law.

In carrying out its mandate, ANPPCAN Kenya works with government departments whose work relates to children, especially the Department of Children’s Services, other non-governmental organizations and the community in general.
